I’m sure no-one really wants to know much about me, but here we go anyway.
My name is Martha, I am a 17 year old girl from South-East England. I live with my Mum, Dad and younger sister Hannah who all enjoy eating my food! I am a Christian, studying for my AS levels in Maths, Chemistry and Food Technology, and baking in every spare moment.
I started cooking when I was about 6 years old when my Mum let me help her and I learnt to peel potatoes and make sauces for her. I was a big fan of making rock cakes, and looking back this perhaps wasn’t my greatest dish (stodgy lumps of dough dotted with whatever I could find in the cupboard). Safe to say I am a little more advanced now… My passion really took of when I started learning proper cooking at school 4 years ago and I discovered I was actually quite good at it. From then on I would cook as often as I could, mainly when I got home from school. Other kids would stop of at the shop on the way home to buy sweets and chocolate, but I would come out with my self-raising flour and ground almonds. I certainly got strange looks at the check-out, an 11 year old girl buying ground almonds…
6 years on, baking is more than a hobby, it’s what I want to do with my life. I’m really interested in studying Food Science when I am older, as the way food works really fascinates me. Cook books aren’t just books, they are the inspiration and direction in my food. I read my cook books before I go to sleep, dream about food all night, and daydream about cooking all day at school when I probably should be concentrating on why Shakespeare uses metaphors or how to factorize a quadratic equation… I cook in a great big mess, so my family avoid the kitchen if they don’t want to end up covered in flour or icing sugar, but the end results are often worth the clear up effort!
